CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Evanescentia

Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office

Salmon, Idaho

C+7

Deputy Al Petrie hung up his phone and jumped up from his desk. “Hey Sheriff!” he called as he trotted toward Ferrara’s office. “Open up your email!”

Ferrara was already doing it when Petrie came through the door. “What’s up, Al?”

“Guy at NCIC said they finally got IDs on your three hit men. He just sent it to you.”

“Did he say why it took so long?”

“Nope. I just assumed they were swamped with all the terrorist attack stuff.”

Ferrara gave the screen a blank look, then looked back at Al. “Nothing there.”

“Give him a minute - I just got off the phone, like, three seconds ago. It might take a little bit.”

“It’s not the Pony Express, Al. It’s email. Instantaneous.” He glared at the monitor. “Or so I’m told.”

“Impatient much, Sheriff?”

Ferrara was thinking of a response when the computer chimed. “Here we go.” He opened the message and downloaded the attachment, bringing the file up on screen.

“Well?” Al was leaning across the desk, trying to see what the file said.

“Hang on…” Ferrara’s lips moved slightly as he scanned the file, looking for anything of value. He scrolled through the first two pages, then scrolled back before continuing to the end of the file. “All three of these clowns list ‘independent security consultant’ as their occupation.”

“So? They were together up there; stands to reason they had the same job description, right?”

“Maybe. But look here.” He pointed to the screen. “This guy? Ex-Marine; Force Recon. Home of record, Albuquerque.” He scrolled to the next page. “This one’s ex-Navy, looks like he washed out of SEAL training. Six months later, he’s an ‘independent security consultant’, living in Las Vegas. And our last contestant,” he scrolled to the final page. “Ex-Army. Served with the 10th Mountain Division; lists Phoenix as his current home of record.”

“Ok,” Al said. “So what does all that mean?”

“Well, for starters, it means that every one of these guys had some level of advanced military training. Except maybe the second guy - he looks like he might have been a pretender, since he didn’t actually make it through SEAL training, but they were all ex-military. They also all list the exact same profession, which as you said, isn’t that unusual considering they were all found at the scene of the crash. But they were there in a professional capacity, and it’s safe to say they weren’t serving drinks.

“What is unusual, is the fact that the body we found in the torched SUV was ID’d as an ex-CIA employee who also listed his current job as an ‘independent security consultant’. Now what are the odds that three guys with that kind of background belonged at that crash site? Or that another guy with a very similar background would be found murdered in a familiar fashion almost a hundred miles away from those three, within a day?”

“Ok,” Al said, unconvinced. “So, even if they’re all connected, the question still stands. Why? Why were they all where they were? Why
